CO₂ & cartridges
Sizes, pour counts, refills, troubleshooting pressure.
Standard 16g threaded food-grade CO₂ cartridges, the same ones used in soda chargers and some bike pumps. They're widely available globally. Tanky sells 5-, 10-, and 20-packs in the store. One cartridge per 2L fill. Two for the 5L.
One 16g cartridge powers a full 2L fill, about 10-12 standard pours. For the 5L, you'll use two cartridges (~25-30 pours). Cartridges are single-use. When the pour slows or fizzles, swap. Cheap and quick, keep a few spares on hand.
Two-step fix: (1) make sure the keg has been depressurised first by pulling the tap until no more flow comes out, this releases pressure on the seal. (2) Use the rubber-grip tool that came in the box (or a tea-towel) for grip, twist anti-clockwise firmly. If it still won't shift, email us a photo and we'll send a replacement regulator under warranty.
In Australia, yes — your CO₂ cartridges go in the box by ground freight and arrive within 2-5 business days alongside your tank. In the US and New Zealand, CO₂ is dangerous goods we can't post in just yet, so for now grab compatible 16g threaded cartridges from any homebrew, kitchenware, or sporting-goods store (direct US delivery is coming once our US warehouse is live). We currently ship tanks to Australia, the USA, and New Zealand.
Yes, CO₂ is the same gas used in commercial beer taps, soda fountains, and SodaStream. Tanky cartridges are food-grade. You're not exposing your drink to anything it hasn't encountered at a bar.
Usually it's one of three things: (1) over-tightening the cartridge wastes gas, tighten only until hiss-then-stop; (2) leaving the keg pressurised between pours drains the cartridge, vent pressure when you're done; (3) filling past the max-fill line means less headspace and more CO₂ needed. If all three look right, email us and we'll sort you out.
They're standard 16g threaded food-grade CO₂ chargers, the same type used in soda chargers and some bike pumps, so they're stocked at kitchenware, homebrew, and sporting stores as well as online. The easiest guaranteed-fit option is Tanky's own 5-, 10-, and 20-packs: in Australia they ship in the box with your order. In the US and New Zealand, pick up compatible 16g cartridges at any homebrew or kitchenware store for now — direct US delivery is coming once our US warehouse is live.
Keep them somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sun, and never heat or puncture a full one. Sealed and dry, they keep indefinitely for any practical purpose, so it's worth holding a few spares. Don't store loose cartridges rolling around in a hot car.
Make sure it's fully spent first (press the piercing pin, there should be no hiss left), then recycle it with steel or metal recycling, the cartridges are steel. Never put a still-pressurised cartridge in general waste or expose it to heat.
